Prescriptive Authority in Mississippi

According to the Mississippi Board of Nursing advanced practice registered nurses may apply for prescriptive authority for Schedule II-V controlled substances in collaboration with a physician. Application requires a $100 Fee. Evidence of 720 hours of monitored practice is required for new applicants.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in Mississippi

APRNs in Mississippi include certified nurse-midwife (CNM), certified nurse practitioner (CNP), and certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA).

Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing Specialty Area

Examination: Varies for Different Certifications

Certification Required: National certification as a Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Clinical Nurse Specialist from a Board-Approved Certification Organization

Examination: NCLEX-RN

Endorsement: Individuals with equivalent licensure in another state who can provide proof of employment as a registered nurse within the past 5 years may apply for licensure through endorsement, subject to a $100 application fee. Registered nurses who hold an active license in another compact state need not apply for licensure in Mississippi, unless they plan to change their permanent residency to Mississippi.

Renewal: Renewal is required every even year. Requirements for renewal are payment of a $100 renewal fee.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Mississippi

Education: Completion of an Approved Licensed Practical Nurse Program

Examination: NCLEX-PN

Endorsement: Individuals with equivalent licensure in another state who can provide proof of employment as a licensed practical nurse within the past 5 years may apply for licensure through endorsement, subject to a $60 application fee. Licensed practical nurses who hold an active license in another compact state need not apply for licensure in Mississippi, unless they plan to change their permanent residency to Mississippi.

Renewal: Renewal is required every odd year. Requirements for renewal are the successful completion of 10 continuing education contact hours for an expanded license, and payment of a $60 renewal fee. Expanded role LPNs (IV Therapy and/or Hemodialysis) must complete a LPN Expanded Role renewal application and submit it with the LPN renewal application.
